Scott Wilson - Influence 2010

  • Normal is all about context
  • What is normal for the people of God?
  • When people think about how they should act, they don’t think about acting as a super-powerful man of God...we think about how we should act to be normal
  • We should have higher expectations than just coming together and it being more of the same
  • 4 Thoughts
  • Compassion is normal
  • A new command I give to you, love each other as I have loved you
  • Jesus came to redefine normal. “You’ve heard it said...but I say...”
  • Compassion & love isn’t a gift of the spirit, it’s a fruit. This is normal
  • James 2:14
  • We have to set the standard within our churches that as the people of God, we are people of love
  • Evangelism is normal
  • Who are you praying for right now?
  • Struggles are normal
  • If you want to be full of the spirit & power, you are asking for a test of your faith
  • Testing always precedes promotion
  • When you’re in a valley, it doesn’t necessarily mean you took a wrong turn...you could be right where God wants you
  • You can be in the middle of God’s will and be in a desert
  • Our people will act differently if they truly believe that struggles are normal in the process of God’s development for their life
  • Miracles are normal
  • Jesus said you will do greater things than I because I am going to the father
  • Miracles are part of the process of God revealing himself to our church and our community
  • Culture is going to keep pressing in and make you think that normal is “come to our church, get saved, and be just like you are”
  • God is totally alert to what is going on in our life.
  • Sometimes our church has been so focused on trying to get people to come to our church, sometimes the attitude isn’t “we’re here to meet the needs of the community,” it’s “we’re here to grow bigger”
  • Jesus is God with us
  • We changed our goals so that a win for the church is a win for the city, the city leaders and the community
  • We have to have an incarnational mindset. Jesus came to rub shoulders with us and redefine normal with us
  • How much more powerful is it when you’re side by side with people in the community? It’s not just about the work, it’s about the relationship
  • 50/50 challenge. Donate 50 hours of time and $50 dollars during 1 year’s time
  • Goal is to get 20,000 people to accept this challenge
  • The greatest power we have is to be like Christ in compassion and love
  • Closing prayer
